Elementum Energy signs its first agreement for the sale of renewable energy Guarantees of Origin

Elementum Energy has signed an agreement with D.TRADING for the sale of Guarantees of Origin — official certificates confirming that the electricity was generated from renewable sources. This is the company’s first such contract since the launch of the relevant mechanism in Ukraine at the end of 2024.

A Guarantee of Origin is a certificate that verifies a specific amount of electricity was produced from clean sources. It enables end consumers — primarily businesses — to report the use of green energy, even if they cannot physically receive it directly from a renewable producer and instead use electricity from the general grid.

Under the agreement, Elementum Energy will transfer 18,000 units (MWh) of Guarantees of Origin certifying electricity generated at its facilities. The certificates will be settled in three stages throughout 2025. For comparison, this volume equals the average consumption of a large industrial enterprise over 5 to 7 months.

A Guarantee of Origin can be compared to a product label that indicates it was made from recycled materials — it confirms that the electricity was generated from low-carbon sources. In the EU, such guarantees (certificates) can be sold within 12 months of generation, and the buyer has another 4 months to use them.

In Europe, Guarantees of Origin are widely used in ESG reporting and can help companies qualify for tax benefits or gain advantages in interactions with regulators. In Ukraine, the market for such certificates is only beginning to take shape, creating new opportunities for renewable energy producers operating outside the balancing group of the Guaranteed Buyer. Guarantees of Origin can become an additional source of income, which may be directed toward capacity expansion, corporate social responsibility initiatives, or other development projects. At the same time, they reflect the business community’s commitment to transparency and accountability.

“Guarantees of Origin primarily make renewable energy more financially attractive. Today, the government supports previously built renewable capacities through the feed-in tariff, which means purchasing electricity at a price above the market rate. However, this tariff no longer applies to new projects. Guarantees of Origin provide an additional income stream for producers — this gives active players more incentive to sell electricity on the market and helps make the market more stable and predictable for new developments. Beyond that, Guarantees of Origin reflect an understanding that the fight against climate change — even in the face of other, more immediate challenges — is a shared responsibility, and Ukrainian businesses are ready to support the green transition,” said Roman Volosheniuk, Commercial Director of Elementum Energy.

This agreement opens new opportunities for both the development of the Guarantees of Origin market in Ukraine and for attracting companies interested in transparently declaring their climate responsibility.
